Welcome to University Medical Center Brackenridge

University Medical Center Brackenridge has long been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation. Our exceptional team of doctors and nurses is committed to providing the highest level of comprehensive maternity care and are ready to welcome your newest addition.
Admissions

Friendly, caring staff will greet you upon your arrival. For your convenience, pre-registration is offered to expectant mothers. Pre-registration will reduce check-in time when you arrive at the hospital in labor. To pre-register, please call our Labor & Delivery Unit at 512-324-7126.
ER Entrance

If you are in labor between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., please enter the hospital through the Emergency Department. Hospital staff will escort you to the Labor & Delivery Unit.
Labor & Delivery Rooms

Comfortable surroundings are an important part of the birthing experience in our family-centered units. Each room is fully-equipped to accommodate women who plan to have a vaginal delivery. If you require a cesarean delivery, you will be moved from the labor room to a special surgical delivery room. The surgical delivery rooms are conveniently located just steps from the Labor & Delivery Unit.
Well-Baby Nursery

At birth, your baby will be transported to the well-baby nursery where footprints will be recorded and two ID bands will be printed to match the mothers ID. Only adults wearing an ID band are allowed to accompany the baby to the secure nursery area. Only staff members with pink badges are allowed to transport your baby. Nursery areas are available for babies during physical examinations and when the babys health needs to be closely monitored.
Snacks

While visiting, friends and family can enjoy a cup of coffee and pastries at our Coffee Bar located in the Main Lobby.
Spacious Mother/Baby Rooms

After delivery, most parents and newborns are moved to the Mother/Baby Unit. Mother/Baby rooms provide more privacy and fewer interruptions from the close medical monitoring that is necessary in the Labor & Delivery Unit. Mothers may keep their baby in their room at all times (as long as mother and baby have no complications). University Medical Center Austin is one of five Seton facilities designated as a 2010 Texas Ten Step site by the Department of State Health Services and Texas Hospital Association for providing optimal breastfeeding support for new mothers.
Peace of Mind

At University Medical Center Brackenridge, we have special security measures in place for our newborns. The Maternity Unit is equipped with a state-of-the-art infant security system. A special wireless device is attached to the babys ankle and an alarm will sound if the baby is beyond the approved areas. Other security measures including matching ID bands for baby and parents as well as special pink ID badges for nurses on the unit help keep your baby safe and secure.
Special Care for Special Deliveries

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University Medical Center Brackenridge provides extra support for babies who need special care or some extra time to grow before going home. The NICU staff embraces a family-centered approach to care and provides special family visiting hours. The NICU team includes board certified neonatologists and skilled nurses who provide care 24-hours a day. University Medical Center Brackenridge has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit the highest designation available from the state. This means that our staff is specially trained to care for very sick infants, newborns who need immediate surgery and those who weigh less than 1,000 grams (2.9 lbs).
Antepartum Unit
Care For Your Spirit

University Medical Center Brackenridge offers all patients and visiting loved ones a place for spiritual healing and meditation. The Chapel is located on the second floor and is open 24 hours a day. Chaplains are available for visitation, prayer, spiritual and emotional support, sacramental ministry, assistance with advanced directives, ethics clarification and support.
Gifts to Welcome the New Addition

Operated by our Volunteers, the University Medical Center Gift Shop offers a variety of gift ideas, from flowers to teddy bears, to congratulate the new family. The gift shop is conveniently located in the Main Lobby on the 2nd floor.
Going Home

Most mothers stay 1-2 days after an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and 2-4 days after a cesarean delivery. Before going home you will need to complete required paperwork, such as the birth certificate information worksheet. Your doctor and your babys doctor will need to write orders for your release. State law requires your baby to have a blood test and be offered an optional Newborn Hearing Screen before you leave the hospital.
